All of our products start out as something else. We use mostly shipping pallets and crates collected locally. We have a few businesses that provide a steady supply of packing crates. However, we have used old cedar 2 x 4 building studs, old furniture (couch frames, tables), wooden shutters, and about anything else made of wood.
Our first step is to break down the raw materials into workable pieces. We sort through the wood and remove nails, staples, and other foreign material. It is then sorted and stored by wood type. When we start a project, we select wood that is similar in appearance and quality. We will, at times, take a single pallet or skid to make one item.
Once we have choosen the wood for our project, it is cut and planed to rough size. We select the wood we want from this supply and finish it to final dimentions. And now our project starts.
We construct our items using fine woodworking techniques including dados, rabits, half lap joints, and mortise and tenons. Most of the item is fitted with glue joints, and very few, if any, mechanical fasteners are used. This assures a quality product that will last through the years.
In the finishing room, we sand, seal and stain the item. Then four coats of clear tung oil are handrubbed into the item. This allows the wood to breathe naturally, preventing future problems. Hardware and glass are the final steps in creating our project.
